Latest government figures show that Ceará tourism registered the best figures for August in the whole of Brazil. The state saw an increase of over 85% in tourist activity, four times ahead of the national average and way in front of its nearest competition. The figure augurs particularly well for the forthcoming high summer season.

August almost doubles July

The more recent official statistics for Brazil correspond to August and they measured the increase in tourism in individual states. According to data from the IBGE (Brazilian Statistical Institute), tourism in Ceará went up by 85.4% in August compared to the month of July.

The rise almost doubles activity in July and shows that Ceará remains a firm favourite among Brazilian holidaymakers after lockdown. The Secretary for Tourism in Ceará, Arialdo Pinho said that the huge uptick “shows our capacity and strength in the sector”.

Ceará Tourism best in country

As well as representing a giant step in the return to pre-pandemic tourism figures, Ceará’s increase also sets the state apart from the rest of Brazil. The national average was 19%, a figure that Ceará easily quadruples.

August saw a big return to tourism throughout Brazil with each state registering an increase compared to July. In second place after Ceará was Bahia with a 48% rise, a figure that Ceará almost doubles. In other favourite holiday destinations the increase was considerably lower. Rio de Janeiro, for example, experienced just 15% more tourism activity.

The perfect post-lockdown destination

Staycations are big in Brazil this year and Ceará offers one of the best places to travel to. As well as plenty of sunshine and fresh air, the state has lots of natural spaces including miles of quiet beaches.

Added to this is the Safe Travels seal, awarded to Ceará by the World Travel and Tourism Council in early October. The seal certifies that the state complies with covid-19 hygiene and safety measures. Importantly, it brings peace of mind to holidaymakers.

Busy summer season ahead

The appeal of Ceará in August looks set to last well into the summer season (December to February in Brazil). Bookings for Christmas and New Year, one of the busiest times on the Brazilian holiday calendar) are brisk. And high demand has driven prices for holiday lets up.

Beach destinations such as Flecheiras (near The Coral) and Porto das Dunas (south of Fortaleza) have seen a big hike in interest in holiday lets. Prices for self-catering accommodation over New Year now average between R$6,000 and R$7,000.

“We will continue to work towards a return to the levels we were seeing before the pandemic,” said Pinho. The Ceará Tourism Board is currently carrying out a countrywide campaign to promote the state to Brazilian holidaymakers.
