Out to the west, the flat plains of the Rio Grande do Norte give way to rolling hills then the lush forests of the Serra da Ibiapaba where, according to Rough Guides, is the only place in Brazil that you can stand in jungle and look down on desert. The state’s coastline offers some of the most beautiful, untouched beaches in Brazil.

Ceará is also home to the Jericacoara National Park, one of Brazil’s national treasures and one of the most visited tourist attractions in the state. It is a highly protected area covering 82 sq km of unspoilt sand dunes, lagoons, sandbanks and mangroves.
