The pandemic has changed many things in life including how and where we want to go on holiday. A recent survey revealed six new trends in Brazilian tourism. They confirmed the national preference for a holiday in the open air, away from crowds and with health and hygiene protocols in place. Ceará in Northeast Brazil ticks all these boxes and as a result, stands as the top destination for Brazilian holidaymakers in 2021.
Keen to get back to travel
The accommodation portal Booking carried out a survey in 28 countries including Brazil to understand the new trends in tourism. It revealed pent-up demand for holidays within the country and the desire to travel more.
67% of Brazilians who answered the survey said they were keen to get back to travelling and 64% claimed they “want to make up for lost time” by taking more trips. During lockdown, almost all (98%) had looked at booking a holiday with 48% searching at least once a week.
Open spaces
Since the lifting of lockdown, Brazilians have shown a preference for getting out into nature. Destinations offering open spaces in the fresh air have soared in popularity as holidaymakers look to get away from cities and crowds.
Lesser known beaches on the Brazilian coastline have come into their own. Flecheiras on the coast in Ceará is one such example. This quiet stretch of sands has seen huge demand for bookings over the Christmas and New Year holiday season and as a result, prices for holiday lets have doubled.
The Booking survey showed a trend for “simple pleasures” and Brazilians are keen to get away to relax.
Holiday lets more popular
The desire to social distance has prompted a shift in accommodation preferences. While in 2019, 60% of Brazilians preferred to stay in hotels, in 2020, 49% are more interested in holiday lets. New trends in Brazilian tourism have therefore brought vacation rentals to centre stage of the holiday market.
Sustainability has also gained in importance. According to the survey, 71% of Brazilians are including the destination’s contribution to the environment as one of their holiday search criteria.
Demand for ‘bleasure’
Working from home looks here to stay for the short and medium term and this trend has also affected the holiday market. ‘Bleasure’, a combination of business and pleasure, is also important for Brazilians.
43% say they are looking for accommodation that allows them to work while they’re on holiday. Vacation rentals in Brazil with space for a home office or workspace and with a good internet connections are therefore very important.
Covid-19 protocols
Unsurprisingly, health and hygiene also feature as an important factor in choosing a holiday destination. 81% of Brazilians said they would only book if covid-19 protocols were in place. Since the end of lockdown, Brazilian tourism has focused on introducing strict covid-19 protocols and many destinations have implemented them.
In late September, Ceará received the Safe Travels seal. Awarded by the World Travel and Tourism Council, the universally recognised seal certifies that a destination complies with covid-19 hygiene and safety measures.
Fortaleza and Ceará preferred destinations
Northeast Brazil has traditionally featured as the Brazilian’s favourite holiday destination and 2021 is no different. A recent survey by the holiday portal Decolar found that the region took 7 out of the top 10 places for holidays in Brazil in 2021.
With its unspoilt coastline and open spaces, Ceará stands out as one of the top spots. The Decolar survey revealed that Fortaleza, the capita of the state, was the absolute favourite for holidays next year.
