The state government recently released new plans for the conservation of popular areas for Ceará tourism including the Mundau River estuary near The Coral Resort. The latest rules establish permitted activities within the four locations, all of which stand out for their exceptional natural surroundings.

Conservation plans for Mundau River

This area lies within easy reach of The Coral, just along the beach from Flecheiras. Located between the municipalities of Trairi and Itapipoca, the Mundau River estuary extends over 1,596 hectares. It’s renowned for the beauty of its dunes and mangrove swamps. In addition, it ranks as one of the best places in the state for shrimp.

The main aim of the latest conservation plan is to “protect the fragile ecological balance” in the area. The main prohibitions include introducing invasive species, grazing by animals and removing native vegetation.

In terms of tourism activities, tents and kiosks are not allowed on the beach, nor must the river water be polluted. However, simple structures for tourism are permitted as well as walking routes exploring the local environment around the Mundau River

Three other special conservation areas in Ceará

The latest plans also include the Curú River estuary and the dunes at Lagoinha and Paracuru. All three, like Mundau River, are areas of outstanding natural beauty and now subject to new rules for preserving the environment.

Any action leading to deforestation is now forbidden in all three and no extraction of minerals is allowed in the Curú River. The dune areas suffer particularly from wildfires and erosion, so the new conservation plans include actions to limit these damaging effects.

Attracting the right kind of tourism

Famous for its stunning coastline and wild landscapes inland, Ceará is one of the most attractive states in Northeast Brazil. The western coast between Fortaleza and Jericoacoara boasts some of the most undeveloped beaches, among the quietest in the state.

They include the coastal stretch of Trairi with the sandy gems of Flecheiras and Guajiru among the main attractions. The latest conservation plans will boost the area’s appeal and continue to draw tourists looking for a quiet getaway in nature.

The Coral Resort sits on one million square metres of land on Flecheiras beach and has conservation at the heart of its development. Much of the resort remains as nature intended, with pristine dunes and beaches, freshwater streams, natural lagoons and plantations of coconuts and palms.
