International and local travel restrictions, together with health and hygiene protocols, have boosted staycations throughout the world. Brazil is no exception and domestic travel is currently booming as more and more Brazilians discover the benefits from vacationing in their home country. Self-catering accommodation is one of the most popular staycation options and as a result, 2022 looks set to be the year for holiday lets in Ceará.
Ceará top destination for international and domestic tourism
This state in Northeast Brazil regularly features as the nation’s favourite holiday spot and its popularity has risen still further during the pandemic. Tourism grew by 19% growth in 2021 and visitor figures for the recent New Year period are similar to 2020.
In addition, Ceará enjoys a strategic position in Northeast Brazil. Its proximity to Europe and North America, plus its pleasant year-round climate and stunning coastline, mean that the state forms part of the world’s principal tourism routes.
Holiday lets in Ceará tick all boxes
Before 2020, self-catering accommodation in Brazil ranked below hotels in popularity, but the pandemic has shifted the paradigm. As a result, Brazilians have discovered that holiday lets in Ceará, particularly high-end properties, cost less than a comparable hotel.
In the case of holiday lets in Ceará, they also tend to be in quieter, less crowded locations, a priority for most holidaymakers over the last two years. Flecheiras is one of these locations, as highlighted in a recent article in the regional broadsheet, O Povo.
The article points out that holiday spots such as Flecheiras and Jeriococoara have also appeared on the radar of international buyers keen to invest in buy-to-let properties. According to the sources cited, foreign investment in holiday lets in Ceará increased by 10% during 2021.
Ceará to benefit
“The tourist market is experiencing big changes,” said Iuri Barbosa, Director of a holiday let start-up in Ceará, quoted in the article. “The boom in staycations from pent-up demand will undoubtedly benefit Northeast Brazil,” he added.
International analysts agree with this potential, as underlined by Forbes, who chose Fortaleza as one of the top six places to invest this year. According to the US broadsheet, Ceará makes a “top choice for a cash-flowing investment” and its property market offers “bona-fide bargains” to foreign buyers.
The state also featured in the top rankings for Forbes in 2021 when Ceará stood out for its purchasing power. Dollar buyers, in particular, can take advantage of the exchange rate leverage that Forbes calculates is at least 7% this year.
