A recent survey has revealed that Fortaleza is the favourite holiday destination for Brazilians this coming summer 2021. The capital of Ceará moves up one position from second place last year. Northeast Brazil dominates the ranking and is home to seven out of the top ten destinations.
Most popular holiday destination in Brazil
The survey carried out by Decolar, the largest travel agent in Brazil, looked at bookings made for holiday packages until 10 January. Christmas and New Year are the busiest times on the Brazilian holiday calendar and signal the start of the summer in the country.
Fortaleza was the popular destination for summer 2021, rising up one place since 2020. The capital always ranks among the top five holiday locations in Brazil and regularly takes first or second place.
Northeast Brazil an eternal favourite
The region tends to dominate the rankings for favourite holiday spots because of its warm and sunny climate and stunning natural surroundings. In the Decolar survey for summer 2021, Northeast Brazil takes seven out of the top ten.
After Fortaleza, Alagoas is the next most popular holiday destination in Brazil with Recife coming close in third place. Other favoured Northeast Brazil holiday spots include Natal and Salvador, ranked fifth and sixth respectively.
Ceará essential part of Brazilian tourism

Embratur to include Ceará in promotion
Neto cited data from Google that showed that demand for “natural tourism”, a speciality in Ceará, has risen from 10% to 54% since the pandemic began. This figure led the World Tourism Organization to mention Brazil as the country with the best potential in the recovery of the sector. Neto also pointed out that Ceará was already leading figures for tourism in 2019 and experienced higher growth than its neighbouring Northeast states.
Neto mentioned that Embratur plans to promote natural tourism as one of the drivers of economic rebound in the sector. “We want to make the most of the current time with restrictions on travel abroad to boost our strong points among Brazilians themselves,” he said.
His comments reiterate the importance of staycations this year. And Ceará is one of the key destinations within Brazil for this type of holiday. The high hotel occupancy in Ceará during September and October holiday weekends and the recent Decolar survey underline the state’s role as leader of tourism in Brazil.
