The king of water sports has returned to the water in Northeast Brazil after weeks of no activity due to covid. Practice sessions and competitions for kitesurf in Ceará resumed normal activity in early October. Local businesses particularly welcomed the return as kitesurfing is one of the main drivers of tourism in the state.
Perfect conditions
Ceará brings together the ideal ingredients for kitesurf. Warm water and miles of golden sands combine with ocean breezes to make conditions perfect for the sport. Every year, thousands of surfers flock to this part of Brazil to practise their favourite water sport.
2020 has, of course, been an unusual year for the sport with kitesurfing on hold during lockdown. But the professionals are resetting the clock and returning to the perfect beaches in Ceará.
Lucky locals
With World Kitesurfing Championship competitions postponed until next year, kitesurfers are using the rest of 2020 for practice sessions. And those who live in Ceará are the lucky ones.
“Everyone has to train in their own country and I’m in Brazil, the best place in the world,” said Mikaili Sol. At just 15 and with four junior championship titles to her name, Mikaili is from Ceará and well aware of the advantages her home state offers. “In Germany, for example, you can’t sail,” she said. “But I can train here and improve ready for the World Championship.”
Strict protocol
Like all activities this year, kitesurf in Ceará now takes place with strict hygiene controls and regulations. All participants need to observe social distancing on land and in the sea, and wear masks on the beach.
The Surfin Sem Fin circuit (SSF, endless surfing) that travels around Brazil and includes Ceará in its itinerary also has to observe health protocols. Competitors on the circuit need to take tests for covid-19 before taking part and at the end of a competition.
Kitesurfing at Ocean Lounge
The Coral beach club, Ocean Lounge, offers the king of sports with a kitesurfing school with tuition at all levels. Equipment is also available for hire. The beach at the resort enjoys one of the most idyllic spots along the Ceará coastline for kitesurfing. The waters are quieter too giving kitesurfers more room to ride the waves.

The kitesurf school is just one of the high-end activities on offer for guests and residents at The Coral. Ocean Lounge has a full programme of entertainment for all ages, sports activities and a restaurant serving local and international cuisine.
